Hi, I’m Bre—a Buddhist chaplain based in Decatur, IL. My work is rooted in mutual aid and social justice, which inspired me to found The Rising Phoenix (Decatur, IL), an initiative dedicated to bringing vital resources to our community.
With over five years of experience, I strive to weave my faith and passion into actionable change, fostering a space where everyone can thrive. Every project I undertake reflects my deep love for humanity and my unwavering commitment to equity and justice.
When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me playing with my service dog, lost in a good book, or crafting something new. Thanks for stopping by—I’d love to connect with you!
These are the current mutual aid projects occurring in Decatur, Illinois. As this group grows, I'll be adding more. If you have a mutual aid project that I can be a part of, please email me. I'm always looking for ways to help my neighbors!
With everything that's happening within the world, there are numerous causes for which information needs distributed. The Rising Phoenix is working diligently to distribute this information for the good of all involved.
If you find yourself in need of such resources, check out this list. It also contains ethical businesses in our area.
This Facebook group is for Decatur IL residents to post their needs/offers.

Here you will find a variety of free books (a.k.a. PDF files). These books are in the public domain. We believe that education is power and as such you may find some books that people have tried to ban. If you believe in such bans, this library is probably not for you. Otherwise, please enjoy!
(If you find a book you'd like to add, please email me the PDF file!)
Little Free Libraries provide free books in communities where access is limited due to fees or transportation issues. They operate on a "take a book, leave a book" system, but not everyone can donate, leaving fewer books available. The library stewards often have to restock them.
That’s where we help! We collect and donate books. We also collect funds to buy affordable books for them. (We can send you a picture of the books we buy and place in the library so you see the impact you make. Since this is a mutual aid project, we cannot give you anything for your taxes.)
This group rescues kittens with special needs. After helping them get healthy in a way that's affordable to new pet owners, they are then available to be adopted. Currently they are running a GoFundMe for one of their cats that needs medical attention. Believing that every creature (both human and critter alike) deserves to live a quality life, we're sharing their campaign on social media for them.
Consider purchasing some of these items for when prices increase due to tariffs. Set them aside somewhere in your home to share with your neighbors who will be in need because they didn't have the means to buy these items right now.
